Prescott, Jerome and Sedona with the kids

Thursday, 9/19/13
At the last minute we decided to drive to Prescott  to be with Neal for his last Friday off before his rotations of outlying cities had started.  After a very long drive via highway 20 and Jacob Lake we finally arrived at the kids home about 8:30pm their time.  We were greeted by the moppy-haired, adorable Afton who immediately gave grandma a great big hug, and pointed at me saying “poppa”.  Then after a brief warm-up period I too received some hugs from the little princess.  That evening we visited with Neal and ate some snacks while we waited for Erin to return from her recital.

Friday, 9/20/13
We were treated to a comfy night sleep on a blow up Beauty Rest, then gobbled up some of Neal’s tasty, orange-flavored cinnamon rolls then headed out to Watson Lake to try our hands at kayaking.  Unfortunately the rental station was closed so we decided instead to go to Lynx Lake and walk around a bit.  While there, Afton especially liked the cafĂ© where the taxidermy mounts of javelina, deer and fish ‘sceered’ her.  Our stroll around the pristine lake was cut short when Afton scraped her lip on one of her tumbles.  That afternoon, while Erin and Neal were at their first ultrasound appointment, I decided to try and find a shortcut over to Watson Lake, which, on the iPad, appeared to only be a couple miles due north of their home.  My quest was unsuccessful but fun nonetheless.  After we all got back together we drove into town and ate at Mexican food at Hugo’s on North Montezuma Street.  Afterwards we again sought out another beautiful Prescott lake called Goldwater.  On the trail to the other side of the lake Afton thoroughly enjoyed climbing on the granite outcroppings, even though her balancing skills put her body in constant peril.  She was none too pleased when her parents tried to pry her off when it was time to go.  That evening we watched some more episodes of Seinfeld which the kids had rented.

I thought this picture turned out pretty good

 Sedona
I could be mistaken, but this looks a lot like that movie star we saw before

Saturday, 9/21/13
We decided to drive to Sedona on highway 89A via the old mining town of Jerome.  This could have only been slightly better if somehow we could have rode motorcycles from Prescott to Jerome.   But what a blast.  We grabbed a Blimpie sandwich in the town of Cottonwood while taking turns holding Afton while she slept then headed on to Sedona.  It was quite crowded but we enjoyed Exposures International art gallery then hiked the West Fork Oak Creek trail taking lots of nice pics.  At the end of the day we did a little shopping blitz before heading home for some Papa Johns pizza.

Sunday, 9/22/13
We woke up early and decided to drive through Monument Valley and Moab.  It was a nice drive until the hailstorm between Blanding and Monticello.  It was quite fierce.  After stopping in Moab at Pasta Jays we finally arrived home.

This trip made quite an impression on Karrol and I.  First we noticed how incredibly cute Afton is and how wonderful and loving her parents are.  But we also noticed how mature and caring Neal has become.  Or maybe he’s always been that way and we’re just noticing.  Either way we were truly humbled and impressed by Neal’s act of concern and caring for everyone.  Neal’s love for Afton and Erin is heart-warmingly obvious.  He was very concerned when Afton, while napping, might not get her share of ice cream.  Neal truly showed he cared for me by texting and calling directions and tips on my drive, always making sure I was ok.  For the few days we were there, being a part of that families’ routine was a lot of fun.  Everything from watching Afton gaze at her horse video, calming her while she got her hair styled in the morning, to watching Neal and Erin embrace during movie time made we one proud poppa.  I’m going to miss them, but I’m so glad they’re not too far away for regular visits.

Creek beds and pretty girls

For some reason I'd like to put together a little collage of pretty creek beds I've ran into while hiking this year, along with some pretty ladies.  A little weird combination I know, but let's see what happens with this...

First the creek beds.  Here's one from Glacier NP.  I like the colors
This is from Butler Fork's hike this morning 9/15/13

Another upstream a bit from the one above.
Now, on to the ladies.  Here's Mom with her cool car.
A couple of gorgeous creatures I happen to know.
 I miss you!!!
We had a great time at this creek with Grandma, Neal, Erin and Afton
Another combination picture.  A beautiful gal in a creek bed.  Kinda goes with the motif.
Not sure how this one got in to the mix, but since Vanessa took it and there's water, I figured it qualified.
Beautiful ladies shopping.
Jen and Fam.  We had a great time with you guys!
Very pretty gals
I stole this picture off of Erin's blog.  She's such a great Mom.  I've never seen a bad picture taken of her.

Neff's Canyon

Here's a few pictures from this past weekend (7/25/13).  Most memorable was the fantastic hike I took alone up Neff's Canyon on Saturday afternoon.  More on that later.  The first two pictures are from Shawn Sandberg's wedding at Mt. Timpanogos Temple.  Afterward, Mallory joined us for a nice lunch at Mekong when we got back to SL.  We all had a great time visiting.
My gorgeous wife and her beautiful sister.  And, no, she didn't make me say it.  Utah County made me call them "Sister Wives"
The happy couple Shawn and Janine

The trail head map for Neff's Canyon.  The original plan was to hike up Neff's and down Millcreek, but I got a little lost, tired and cliffed out. Plus I'm a wuss.  You'll notice at the top of the map the trail isn't really defined.  I think that's on purpose.
Above the meadow at 7600' in elevation the views and the flowers really get spectacular.  Oddly enough not many people venture above the meadow.  Too bad for them.
In several wild-flower-filled meadows I had to give the plentiful and enormous bumble bees a wide berth lest they call their friends, sting me silly, then carry me away.
It's really tough to capture the wildflower beauty on film. All these pics were taken with my cell phone camera.

About 8400' in elevation this worn out, but still functioning spring provided a much-needed refill. In hindsight I probably needed to take a left just before this spring if I wanted to follow the ridgeline back down towards Desolation or Thayne Canyon and down into Millcreek.
In taking the wrong turn the reward at 8800' looking east into the "unexplored" region of Mill B North Fork basin was a wonderful bonus.  I figured that about 1/2 mile beyond the ridge in the center of the picture is Mt. Raymond.  Below, Antelope Island and the GSL can be seen before panning south and east into the nether regions of Mt. Olympus wilderness.

Glacier NP July 2013

Erin and Jeni have inspired me.  Their blog's provide just the right amount info and this seems to be a great way of posting pictures and commentary for others to enjoy at their leisure.  Here's a few pics from our trip to Glacier NP.
Mt Oberlin is on the left
Hidden Lake from the Logan Pass overlook trail
My camera's zoom works pretty good.  These big horn sheep can be seen in the middle left of the picture above from the overlook
 Lots of marmots playing around
The was just below Logan Pass.  Lunch Box falls.  But we'd already eaten.  Dang!
St. Mary Falls.  Beautiful, clear, light green water
